A private dinner on the water in Lisbon: how to do it right
There are two dinners on the Tagus: the shared cruise with a buffet, and the boat that is entirely yours with a chef aboard. The honest comparison, priced.

Lisbon at dusk is built to be seen from the river: the bridge going amber, the city stacking its hills into the last light, Cristo Rei keeping watch. Eating dinner in the middle of that picture is one of the city's great moves, and there are exactly two ways to make it, at very different altitudes.
Option one: the shared dinner cruise
The tourist dinner cruise is the accessible version: a scheduled departure, a set menu or buffet, wine included, two hours of skyline with fifty fellow passengers. Prices run €60 to €90 per person, booking is instant, and for a couple passing through town it delivers the postcard honestly. Its limits are structural: the menu is banquet logistics, the soundtrack is shared, and the boat follows its schedule, not your evening. It is dinner with a view, not a dinner party.
Option two: your own boat, your own chef
The private version has two moving parts. The boat comes from a charter operator: sailing yachts and catamarans out of Alcântara, Belém or Parque das Nações, roughly €120 to €500 per hour depending on vessel, skippered. The dinner comes from us: menus designed for the vessel, cold courses built ashore, hot courses finished aboard where the galley allows, served at anchor in the calm stretch of the Tagus while the sun does the décor. Deck formats, canapés, boards and bar service, run €55 to €90 per guest; a full plated dinner at anchor runs €120 to €180, the same mechanics as our boat party catering in Lisbon.
The math surprises people: for a group of ten, a 3-hour private charter plus a proper served dinner lands around €200 to €300 per head at the premium end, against €60 to €90 each for the shared cruise. Triple the price, ten times the evening, and for milestone occasions that ratio flatters the private option.
The proposal dinner, since you were wondering
A meaningful share of private dinners afloat are engagements in progress, and the format is close to cheat-proof: golden hour at anchor, a table for two on deck, the ring arriving between main and dessert, a skipper and chef team that have rehearsed their invisibility. Two pieces of hard-won advice: brief everyone (the crew choreographs around the moment), and schedule for the hour before sunset, when the light forgives nerves and photographs everything kindly.
When to go
May, June and September are the sweet months: warm evenings, reliable seas, sunsets at civilised dinner hours. July and August work with earlier bookings and a tolerance for busier water. October can be glorious and can be cancelled; the river tells you that week. Winter dinners afloat exist for the brave and the blanketed, and operators price them accordingly. Whatever the month, weekends book first: reserve the boat 3 to 4 weeks ahead in season, and the catering follows your booking within days.
How to book the whole thing
Sequence matters: pick the date, book the boat (operators on our boat party companies list all run private charters), then send us the operator's name, vessel and headcount. We coordinate galley, boarding and timing directly with the skipper, and the only decision left on the water is when to open the second bottle.
