We run a private chef operation across Portugal, so these are the numbers we actually quote, not scraped marketplace averages. The chef platforms hide pricing behind quote forms; here it is in the open, for 2026, with everything the figures do and don't include.

The short answer

A private chef in Portugal costs €90 to €160 per guest for a dinner party at your villa or home in 2026, and €120 to €180 per guest for a fine-dining tasting menu, all-in: menu design, ingredients, the chef and service team, setup and cleanup.

Price per guest, by format

Format€/guest (2026)What it is
Villa dinner party (3–4 courses)€90 – €160The classic chef-at-home dinner, plated at your table
Seated tasting menu (5–7 courses)€120 – €180Fine-dining execution by a Michelin-trained team
Cocktail + canapé reception€55 – €90Standing format before or instead of dinner
Multi-day villa retainer€110 – €190 /guest/dayLunch + dinner daily, multi-day pricing applied
Onboard / yacht dinner€120 – €180Plated dinner at anchor or charter-day menus

Two notes on how this market really prices:

  • Small tables carry minimums. A dinner for 2 to 6 guests is priced against a minimum spend, not raw headcount; expect the equivalent of 6 to 8 covers. Above roughly 20 guests, per-guest prices ease slightly.
  • "All-in" is not universal. Our figures include ingredients, team, setup and cleanup. Many freelance quotes are chef-fee-only, with groceries, an assistant and washing-up billed on top. Always ask what the number covers.

For a dinner party of 10, that puts the real total at €900 to €1,600; a tasting menu for the same table runs €1,200 to €1,800.

How much is a private chef for one night?

The question people actually type. For a single evening, all-in, in 2026:

  • Table of 8: €720 to €1,280 for a 3–4 course dinner
  • Table of 12: €1,080 to €1,920
  • Table of 20: €1,800 to €3,200

There is no separate "night rate": the per-guest price carries everything, and one dinner is simply guest count times the format you choose. What changes the night's total is the menu tier and any wine pairing, not the hour we leave.

Prices by region

Same service, different postcode, different pressure on the calendar. These are 2026 villa-dinner ranges:

RegionVilla dinner €/guestTasting menu €/guest
Lisbon€90 – €150€120 – €170
Cascais€100 – €160€130 – €180
Algarve€100 – €160€130 – €180
Comporta€110 – €160€130 – €180
Quinta do Lago€110 – €160€130 – €180

Lisbon prices lowest because chefs live there: no travel, no accommodation, deep supplier access. Comporta and Quinta do Lago sit at the top because summer demand outstrips the number of serious teams, and July–August dates transact at the top of the range and book out weeks ahead. Full service details per region: private chef in Lisbon, private chef in Cascais, private chef in the Algarve, private chef in Comporta, private chef in Vilamoura, private chef in Quinta do Lago, private chef in Albufeira, private chef in Carvoeiro and private chef in Lagos.

What moves the price

  • Menu complexity. A 3-course seasonal dinner and a 7-course tasting menu are different products with different team sizes; the second needs a sous-chef and dedicated service.
  • Guest count. Minimums below 6 guests, mild per-guest relief above 20.
  • Ingredients. Portuguese fish and produce keep quality high at sane cost; carabineiro, wagyu and caviar move a menu €20–40 per guest.
  • Your kitchen. A villa with a real kitchen costs nothing extra. No kitchen, or an induction hob and a dream, means field equipment, quoted upfront by any serious operator.
  • Season and calendar. Algarve and Comporta in July–August, and the Christmas–New Year window everywhere, price at the top of the ranges.
  • Wine. Pairings add €35–70 per guest; Portuguese cellars over-deliver at every tier, so imported labels are rarely worth the premium.

Private chef vs restaurant vs catering

For a table of 8, the honest comparison looks like this:

OptionReal cost for 8What you're buying
Private chef at home€720 – €1,280 all-inMenu built for your table, your venue, no closing time
Fine-dining restaurant€120 – €250 per seat, food onlyThe starred room and cellar; wine and transport on top
Event cateringFrom ~20 guestsFull production: staff, bar, tableware, built for volume

The crossover logic: below 6 guests, a top restaurant is usually the better deal because of chef minimums. From 6 to 20, a private chef wins on both price and experience once wine and logistics are counted. Above 20, you want event catering economics, a brigade, not a chef. And if what you're really pricing is Michelin-trained execution at home, we broke that tier down separately in Michelin-level private dining in Portugal.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private chef cost in Portugal?

€90–160 per guest in 2026 for a villa or at-home dinner party, and €120–180 per guest for a fine-dining tasting menu, all-in: ingredients, chef and service team, setup and cleanup. A dinner for 10 runs €900–1,600 in practice.

How much does a private chef cost for a week in a villa?

Multi-day retainers run €110–190 per guest per day for lunch and dinner. A family of 6 for a 7-day Algarve stay lands at roughly €4,600–8,000 all-in, with menus rotating daily.

Is a private chef cheaper than a fine-dining restaurant?

From about 6 guests, usually yes. A villa dinner at €90–160 per guest includes everything; restaurant tasting menus in Portugal run €120–250 per seat for food alone, before wine and transport. Below 6 guests, chef minimums tip the math back toward the restaurant.

What is included in the per-guest price?

With a full-service operator: menu design, ingredients, the chef and service team, setup and complete cleanup. Freelance quotes are often chef-fee-only, with groceries and assistants billed on top, so always confirm what the number covers in writing.

Do private chef prices change by region and season?

Yes. Lisbon prices lowest (villa dinners from €90 per guest); Comporta and Quinta do Lago start around €110. July–August in the Algarve and Comporta, and the Christmas–New Year window everywhere, transact at the top of the ranges and book out weeks ahead.
