Personal chef vs private chef vs caterer: what's the difference in Portugal?

The three job titles get used interchangeably and they are not the same product. What each one does, what each costs in Portugal, and which one your plans actually need.

The three titles get used interchangeably by search engines, booking platforms and half the industry itself, and they describe genuinely different products. If you are pricing food for a trip or an event in Portugal, sorting the vocabulary first will save you from comparing quotes that were never for the same thing.

The short answer

A personal chef cooks for you regularly, usually meal prep or weekly cooking for one household. A private chef cooks and serves a specific occasion at your venue, one dinner or one stay. A caterer produces food and service at event scale, from about 20 guests up to hundreds. In Portugal's holiday market the middle category does most of the work, and the borders blur, which is where the confusion (and the mispriced quotes) come from.

What a personal chef does

The personal chef model is ongoing service: weekly meal preparation, stocked fridges, family cooking on a schedule, sometimes a live-in arrangement. It is a staffing relationship, priced per day or per month rather than per event, and it is the least common of the three in Portugal outside a small residential market in Lisbon, Cascais and the golden triangle. If what you want is "someone cooks for us all week at the villa", you are not actually shopping for this; you are shopping for a villa chef, which sits in the next category.

What a private chef does

A private chef serves occasions: a plated dinner at your home, villa or rental, cooked on site and served at your table, then the kitchen reset as if nothing happened. In Portugal this is the engine of the market, from a dinner party of 8 to 20 at an Algarve villa to a tasting menu for two in Lisbon. Multi-day versions exist for holiday stays, dinner-only or full board, with menus rotating daily.

At 2026 prices: €90 to €160 per guest for a 3 to 4 course dinner all-in, €120 to €180 for tasting menus, and €110 to €190 per guest per day for multi-day villa service. The complete breakdown lives in our private chef cost guide.

What a caterer does

Catering is event production: brigade kitchen, service team, bar, tableware, setup and teardown, built for volume. From roughly 20 guests the economics flip in catering's favor, and above 50 it is the only sane answer. Weddings, corporate events and big family celebrations in Portugal are catering territory, including venues with no kitchen at all, where a serious operator builds a field kitchen on site. Formats range from cocktail and stations at €55 to €90 per guest to seated fine dining at €120 to €180.

Where the lines blur in Portugal

Portugal's holiday market invents hybrids constantly. A villa week with a daily chef is personal-chef cadence at private-chef structure. A 25-guest micro-wedding is a private chef dinner wearing catering's clothes. A yacht charter day is a private chef in a caterer's logistics problem. The practical consequence: do not shop by job title. Shop by describing the occasion, the venue and the headcount, and let the operator tell you which product it is. Companies that do both, like ours, will move you between models mid-conversation as the guest list grows.

Which one your plans need

  • Romantic dinner or family table up to 6: private chef, or a marketplace freelancer for casual briefs.
  • Group of 8 to 20 at a villa: private chef with a service team, the format Portugal does best.
  • 20 to 50 guests: the crossover zone, get both a private chef and a catering quote.
  • Wedding or 50+: caterer, full stop.
  • Every meal handled for a week: villa chef service, priced per guest per day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a personal chef and a private chef?

A personal chef cooks for one household on an ongoing basis, weekly meal prep or scheduled family cooking, priced per day or month. A private chef serves specific occasions: a dinner or a stay, cooked and served at your venue, priced per guest. In Portugal's holiday market, most 'personal chef' searches actually want a private chef.

At what group size should I use a caterer instead of a private chef?

From about 20 guests the economics start favoring catering, and above 50 it is the only practical answer. Between 20 and 50, get both quotes: a private chef team can often serve a 25-guest micro-wedding beautifully at €90 to €160 per guest.

How much does each option cost in Portugal in 2026?

Private chef dinners run €90 to €160 per guest all-in, tasting menus €120 to €180, multi-day villa service €110 to €190 per guest per day. Catering runs €55 to €90 per guest for cocktail formats up to €120 to €180 for seated fine dining. Personal-chef arrangements are quoted per household.

Is a villa chef a personal chef or a private chef?

Structurally a private chef on a multi-day arrangement: dinner-only or full board for the length of the stay, menus rotating daily, groceries handled, priced per guest per day. It borrows the personal chef's cadence without the long-term staffing relationship.

Do any companies cover all three models?

Full-service operators do, and it matters at the borders: a dinner for 12 that grows into a party of 40 stays with the same kitchen instead of restarting the search. Describe the occasion, venue and headcount and let the operator map it to the right product.
